Description:
All individuals interested in an apprenticeship opportunity in the plumbing trade will start out in a pre-apprentice role. The time spent in this position/capacity could be up to 12 months, but is largely dependent on an individual’s demonstration of the criteria outlined on the following page. The pre-apprentice is under the supervision of a plumber on the job or directed by management while working in the shop.
Plumbing Laborer/Pre-Apprentice Evaluation Criteria
The criteria listed below are the criteria that a plumbing pre-apprentice will be evaluated on during the course of the first year. Performance and feedback in these areas will be the basis of making a determination on whether or not the company will make an investment and indenture them into the apprenticeship program.
Attitude - Possesses a positive attitude; upbeat and ready to work; a pleasure to work with. Accepts work assignments without complaining.
Work Ethic – Works hard. Does what it takes to get the job done. Always stays busy. Puts first priority on the needs of the organization or the needs of its customers.
Reliability/Dependability - Shows up to work ready to contribute. Consistently performs required work. Can be counted on to get the job done.
Punctuality & Attendance - Arrives at work on time and ready to contribute. Reports to work daily as scheduled.
Motivation/Initiative - Seeks out and looks for ways to contribute and make an impact. Continually asks “how can I help?”
Teamwork - Works well in a team environment, contributes positively to the team dynamics, and makes positive contributions to the team.
Communication - Communicates effectively and appropriately. Listens well to others.
Mechanical Aptitude/Ability to Learn | Equipment Skills - Learns new skills quickly on his/her own and applies them both quickly and effectively to work situations. Demonstrates the essential skills related to the use of all equipment connected to job responsibilities.
Work Quality & Productivity – Is personally committed to high quality work. Produces high quality work that is highly accurate and reflects well on the organization. Meets or exceeds productivity standards that have been established for his/her organizational level or position. Has successfully combined skills, ability and effort level to ensure that expectations related to results/output are achieved.
Safety - Understands safety practices expected by the organization and adheres to them. Asks questions or seeks out clarification when unsure.
Professional Appearance/Attire - Appropriate appearance and dress for work performed. Looks presentable.
Responsibilities:
The duties to be performed by a pre-apprentice shall include the following:
General Housekeeping
Loading, unloading, distributing and stockpiling material and equipment
Loading and unloading tools
Cleaning, pick-up, and tool repair
Cutting, patching and grouting concrete, wood or masonry holes
Coring
Digging ditches and breaking up concrete
Setting up and tearing down of minor scaffolds
Manual labor necessary for rigging, hoisting, lifting and positioning of heavy equipment
Paint, stencil and tape equipment, piping, and valves
Normal unskilled labor related to piping and plumbing including fire watch
Assisting with plumbing fabrication
Other general labor needs as required
