Description:
The position of Safety Specialist reports to the Corporate Safety Director and is responsible for educating field personnel on correct safety procedures and ensuring safety policies are followed.
Qualifications
• Four-year occupational safety/health degree or equivalent combination of training and related experience with an additional minimum of 5 years of construction experience.
• Proficiency with OSHA standards.
• Knowledge of the construction industry practices, risk management and field operations.
• Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local and company regulations.
• Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures is essential.
• Good understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, etc.
• Strong management, leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities:
• Ensure that the intent of policies, procedures and quality standards is followed in accordance with our Quality Management System.
• Site safety audits to recognize and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors; the ability to prescribe corrective actions and measures for those items repeatedly showing up in audits; develop training sessions for same audit items.
• Investigate all incidents and generate proper reports. Aid in accident/incident investigation as needed.
• Create, Conduct, and Document Tool Box Talks.
• Task Training - As planned and needed.
• Ensure and maintain all required signage is properly posted.
• Stop work to remedy a serious or life-threatening safety deficiency, violation, or unsafe practice. Complete and file disciplinary actions with documentation.
• Provide leadership with a focus on safe work practices and pre-task planning.
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, clients, co-workers and management.
• Assist in the planning of and implement all project safety needs.
• Actively participate in operational planning to create a plan to eliminate hazards.
• Monitor safety portion of OPS Plans are being followed and work with the foreman to correct if not.
• Investigate and procure new task specific safety systems/equipment and educate crews and superintendents as needed.
• Conduct on-site inspections and control hazardous working conditions or unsafe employee activities through teaching and coaching.
• Reward/recognize field personnel for taking outstanding safety initiative.
• Attend and actively participate in daily morning huddles with job crews. Attend daily end of shift (DEOS) meeting when possible.
• Educate foreman on the proper daily work plans/JHA procedure and hold them accountable.
• Assist with/Lead the weekly safety meeting.
• Continue education with regards to safety through seminars, meetings and experiences through higher education.
• Network, communicate and remain current in safety topics and relevant issues with regards to the construction industry.
