Position Purpose
The Shop Safety Manager plays a key role in maintaining a safe, engaged, and compliant safety environment within our fabrication shop. This position partners closely with shop leadership and associates to integrate safety into daily operations while driving continuous improvement across all safety programs. Emphasis on supporting Bassett’s shop and facility operations.
Position Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor safety programs, policies, and procedures to reduce risk and prevent injuries.
- Support delivery of safety training by coordinating logistics, tracking certifications, and assisting with hands-on evaluations.
- Maintain accurate records of training, incidents, inspections, and corrective actions.
- Act as the point of contact for safety-related matters within the shop, including emergency response and first aid coordination.
- Collaborate with facility and production teams to ensure safe operation and upkeep of tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Assist with the selection and evaluation of personal protective equipment (PPE) based on hazard assessments.
- Help lead the Bassett Emergency Response Team in overall direction of training, drills, equipment, and necessary personnel.
- Stay current on regulatory changes, industry best practices, and advancements in safety equipment or processes.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and company-specific safety standards applicable to fabrication operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary safety resource for all fabrication shop, facility associates and leadership, promoting a proactive safety culture.
- Conduct routine safety walkdowns, identifying and mitigating hazards specific to welding, rigging, crane operation, and fabrication processes.
- Lead the shop safety committee, ensuring engagement, follow-through, and continuous improvement of safety initiatives.
- Own safety training for shop personnel, including onboarding, hands-on evaluations, and refresher trainings (e.g., MEWP, forklift, overhead crane).
- Partner with production leadership to integrate safety into operational planning, shift and process changes.
- Manage and investigate shop incidents and near misses, drive root cause analysis, and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented while leading post incident review meetings.
- Manage industrial hygiene tasks such as air sampling, noise monitoring, and PPE assessments; maintain related documentation and SOPs.
- Support safety technology implementation and data tracking through digital platforms (e.g., PowerApps, Monday.com).
- Facilitate behavior-based safety (BBS) observations and use the data to reinforce safe practices and coach for improvement.
- Represent the shop during internal and external safety reviews, insurance audits, and customer visits.
Key Accountabilities
- Maintain a safe and compliant fabrication shop environment by proactively identifying and mitigating safety risks.
- Ensure timely and thorough investigations of all incidents, near misses, and hazards, including follow-up on corrective actions.
- Lead and sustain shop safety committee engagement, driving actionable improvements and associate involvement.
- Execute and track shop-specific safety training and certification requirements, ensuring 100% compliance.
- Provide clear, consistent communication and partnership with shop leadership and associates to promote safety ownership.
Summary of Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a safety-related role preferred.
- BS/BA or similar safety-related degree preferred.
- Prefer candidates with a construction or related background.
- Working knowledge of equipment and materials involved with mechanical trades
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations for manufacturing and construction activities
- Strong communication skills; ability to train/speak to groups
- Positive attitude
- Demonstrated dedication to sustaining a safe work environment through promoting daily practices and personal accountability.
- Strong Computer Skills – Microsoft Suite (especially PowerPoint and Outlook)
- Certifications in First Aid/CPR and OSHA 30-Hour are preferred
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional) and OSHA 500 certifications preferred
